11 Ways to Improve Your Fuel Economy

Quick tips to save you money can't hurt.  Right?  The U.S. Department of Energy requires dealers to keep a copy of their "Fuel Economy Guide" on site to share with consumers.  I was flipping through this exciting read the other day and found some fun facts on the back page. Visit http://www.fueleconomy.gov/ for more information.

  1. Avoid aggressive driving.  What is aggressive driving?  Old timers call it "Hot Roding"  When you floor it then slam on brakes everywhere you go.  This can lower your fuel economy by 33% on the highway and 5% in town.
  2. Go the Speed Limit.  Every 5 MPH you drive over 60 MPH can reduce your fuel economy by 7-8%.
  3. Avoid Idling.  At an idle your fuel economy is 0 MPG.
  4. Use Cruise.  Maintaining a constant speed will save you fuel economy.
  5. Tune it up.  An overdue tune up can cost you 4% in fuel economy.
  6. Tire pressure.  Keep your tires inflated to the manufacturer's recommended tire pressure.  You can lose up to 5% in fuel economy with improperly inflated tires.
  7. Align and Balance.  Make sure your tires have the proper alignment and balance for maximum fuel mileage.
  8. Clean Air Filter.  If you air filter is clogged, your fuel economy can suffer.  Carbureted engines benefit the most from a clean air filter.
  9. Warm it up!  A warm engine is more fuel efficient than a cold one.  A cold start could cost you twice as much in fuel economy.
  10. Lighten Up!  Every 100 lbs you carry can decrease your fuel economy by 1-2%.
  11. Roof Racks.  A loaded roof rack can decrease your fuel economy by 5%.  When you are not carrying a load make sure to remove your racks to reduce drag on your vehicle.

“I am NOT driving a Truck with a V6”

“I am NOT driving a Truck with a V6”

If, I had a nickel for every time we have heard the phrase, “I am NOT driving a truck with a V6”, I would be a little richer.  But, we all knew this was going to happen.  When Ford announced they were putting a 3.5L V6 in the 2011 F-150’s, we all had to take a step back and put our heads around the idea.  We knew it was going to be a challenge to convert our V8 customers to the V6.  Claiming the engine would have better fuel economy and more towing power than the 5.0L V8, Ford had us all intrigued.

When our first F-150 with the Twin Turbo 3.5L EcoBoost V6 arrived we were excited and ready to see if this was the real deal.  I put the key in the ignition and fired up the engine and the first word that popped in my head was “Quiet”.  Honestly, when I think of a powerful engine, I want to hear a little rumble from the motor.  I know the sound means nothing but I am a guy and I like the thunder after the lightning.  On the road this truck really came to life!  Effortless acceleration that will have you at 65 mph before you can check to see if any cops are around.  The twin turbo gives you power off the gate and the extra horsepower at highway speeds.  The truck feels really light on its feet.

The EcoBoost made me say, “Wow!” It is funny how many guys go from, “I am not driving that” to “Get me one today.”  Tow up to 11,300 lbs and get 21 mpg on a full size 4x4 and 23 mpg on the 4x2.  What is not to like?  Now, when they tell me “No way!” a simple test drive has turned customers from certified skeptics to believers.

We want Monday off.

Mr. Odom has made a special deal with the employees of Wynn Odom Ford.  Sales, Service and Parts have been given specific goals to reach by Saturday May 28th.  If the goals are met by each department, we will have our very first Memorial Day Off!  Mr. Odom has been very generous to offer us this special deal.

For the Sales Department to reach our goals we need to sell around 8 more vehicles by Saturday.  Send us a customer that buys a car and we will send you a check for $50.  Make sure they tell us you sent them as soon as they arrive at the dealership.
